Home sauna cost estimator
What will it cost to build your sauna?
A quick, honest way to think about the cost of building a sauna. Make a few choices and get an itemized estimate plus a rough monthly running cost.
Sauna cost calculator
Pick one option in each section. Your estimate appears below once every choice is made.
How the calculator works
The estimate is built up from the same line items a builder would quote, using 2026 national-average ranges. Here is the logic:
- Start from a shell/structure cost for your size, material tier, and technology. For infrared, the radiant emitters are already bundled into the cabin price.
- Add the heater and stones (electric or wood). Wood-burning includes the chimney and heat-shield install, which is the reason it costs 2-3x an electric heater to fit.
- Add electrical. An electric heater needs a dedicated circuit run by a licensed electrician - we assume a standard new circuit indoors and a trenched run outdoors. If your panel is full and needs upgrading, add roughly $1,500-$2,500 on top. Infrared just plugs into a standard outlet, so its electrical line is zero.
- Add a foundation if you are building outdoors - a gravel pad for lighter builds, a poured slab for a heavy permanent cabin.
- Add accessories (backrest, bucket and ladle, thermometer, sauna-rated light).
- Apply labor. Full DIY is $0 in labor but 40-100+ hours of intermediate-to-advanced carpentry. A full contractor build adds close to the materials-plus-heater subtotal again.
- Report the most likely all-in cost as a tightened band around the central estimate (the individual line items rarely all land at their low or all at their high at the same time), and show the full low-high range per line below it.
Sanity-check ranges
We validate the calculator's output against these real-world scenario totals:
- Indoor conversion: DIY $2,000-$4,500 | contractor $5,000-$10,000
- Barrel kit: DIY $3,000-$7,000 | contractor $5,000-$10,000
- Outdoor cabin: DIY $5,000-$12,000 | contractor $12,000-$25,000
- Infrared prefab (plug-in): $1,000-$8,500 all-in, often $0 electrical
What this tool cannot know
It does not know your exact local labor rates, how much spare capacity your electrical panel has, how far the sauna sits from that panel, or what material prices are doing this month. Use it to choose between approaches - infrared plug-in versus a traditional electric build, DIY versus contractor - and to budget a realistic range. Then confirm the two numbers that move the most: a written electrician's quote and a real material list for your chosen size.
